The Bren Foundation team at work

About Us

A foundation built on purpose, not profit.

The Bren Foundation Australia exists for one reason — to end homelessness in this country. Everything we do, every dollar we give, flows from that single commitment.

Our mission

Funding the frontline since 1988

Founded by Shelly-Ann Bren-Ashcroft in 1988, the Bren Foundation Australia has spent more than three decades directing private wealth toward the charities best placed to house, support, and stabilise Australians experiencing homelessness.

We do not run shelters. We do not deliver services. We fund the organisations that do — rigorously, consistently, and without the overhead that erodes so many philanthropic dollars before they reach the people who need them.

How we operate

Self-funded. Lean by design.

The Bren Foundation is entirely self-funded. We accept no government grants and no public donations. Our operating costs — staff, administration, travel, legal — are met entirely from the Bren family estate. Not a single dollar of private donor money is spent on wages or operations.

100% to charities

Every dollar given to us by private donors goes directly to funded charities. We cover our own costs separately, always.

No wages from donations

Staff salaries, legal fees, and operational expenses are funded exclusively from the Bren family estate — never from donor contributions.

Rigorous vetting

We screen every charity before committing funds, assessing governance, overhead ratios, case management quality, and long-term outcomes.

Private giving

We accept private funding — on our terms.

The Bren Foundation accepts private philanthropic contributions under two conditions: a minimum gift of $100,000, or the bequest of a residential property to be used in housing homeless Australians.

These thresholds exist not to exclude, but to ensure that every partnership we enter is meaningful, sustainable, and aligned with our mission. We are not a fundraising organisation — we are a giving organisation that occasionally welcomes aligned private capital.

All private donor funds are held separately from operational accounts. They are disbursed in full to vetted charities, with full transparency reporting provided to the donor.
